As the final arbiter of the law, the Court is charged with ensuring the American people the promise of equal justice under law and, thereby, also functions as guardian and interpreter of the Constitution. The Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and such number of Associate Justices as may be fixed by Congress.

There are a total of nine members of the US Supreme Court, with one chief justice and eight associate justices. The current members of the supreme court are: John G. The Supreme Court of the United States ( SCOTUS) is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. It has ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all U.S. federal court cases, and over state court cases that involve a point of federal law.

The Supreme Judicial Court is the State's highest court and the court of last resort. It has seven justices, presided over by the Chief Justice, who is the head of the Judicial Branch.
