WEBAug 26, 2020 · The most common units of energy are the joule (J), defined as 1 (kg·m 2 )/s 2, and the calorie, defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 g of water by 1°C (1 cal = 4.184 J). Because energy takes many forms, only some of which can be seen or felt, it is defined by its effect on matter.
