Loggerheads are the largest of all hard-shelled turtles. They are named for their massive heads and strong jaws. Their reddish-brown shell, or carapace, is heart-shaped. When on land, it looks like they’re crying because they have a special gland behind their eyes that helps process salt from ocean water. They have an organ that helps them filter their food. They eat prey like conchs, horseshoe crabs, and other animals with hard shells, as well as softer foods like jellyfish, fish, seaweed, and a brown algae called sargassum.
