WEBCrookston, city, seat (1873) of Polk county, northwestern Minnesota, U.S. It lies on Red Lake River, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Sioux and Ojibwa Indians were early inhabitants of the area. Settled in 1872, the city is named for Colonel William Crooks, chief.
